Garrett 1140680 AT Gold Metal Detector
Garrett AT Gold Metal Detector
The Garrett AT Gold is a variation on the excellent Garrett AT Pro metal detector, but slightly modified to make it a better detector for prospecting. Garrett really raised the bar in the world of detection with the AT models.

Description
Garrett AT Gold Metal Detector
The Garrett AT Gold is a variation on the excellent Garrett AT Pro metal detector, but slightly modified to make it a better detector for prospecting. Garrett really raised the bar in the world of detection with the AT models.
Both the AT Pro and AT Gold have three search modes. The first is a default discrimination mode to accept all items with an audio beep in different tones and visual target identification. Pretty much everything beeps, but you can adjust the level at which iron/steel is completely rejected, and this is saved when the detector is turned off. The mode is default and only the iron rejection level can be changed.
The AT Gold runs at a slightly hotter 18kHz and has an all-metal mode based on a true threshold. This makes it a better nugget detector than the AT Pro. However, it is too hot to run on wet salt sand or salt water. It also has only a couple of preset discrimination patterns and therefore lacks the custom discrimination capability that the AT Pro has.
the Garrett AT Gold is an exceptional detector and for anyone looking to use a VLF detector in and around the water it is an obvious choice. Please note that while the detector itself is submersible, the headphones that come with it are not. To use the face of the unit in the water with a mask and snorkel, an optional fully submersible headset is required.
Detection depth, sensitivity and ground handling are on par with other 18 kHz nugget detectors. However, if the waterproof feature is never going to be needed (desert detection?), then the special lubricated o-ring connectors for the headphones and coils add serviceability issues that can be avoided with a regular dry land model. So I think the decision to get a Garrett AT Gold largely depends on whether or not the waterproof design is really necessary.
